Unclear how to use configuration reference in TOML config

Issue

I should be able to use deps = ["{[arbitrary.section.name]deps}", "one", "two", ...] to include the dependencies from that arbitrary section in the current section's deps.

When the arbitrary section is tool.tox.env_run_base or tool.tox.env_build_base (at least), the dependencies from that section get installed, but none of the additionally-specified dependencies "one", "two", ... get installed.

Arbitrary other section names like [deps_base], [deps.base], or even [tool.tox.deps_base] seem to install all specified dependencies as expected.

The documentation examples show env_run_base as a place to put basal dependencies, and although they don't use this exact configuration scenario they might encourage it as a natural next step.

Oddly I also tried [tool.tox.env_run_basezzz] and that still fails also, so smells like a startswith kind of problem somewhere?

I should be able to use deps = ["{[arbitrary.section.name]deps}", "one", "two", ...] to include the dependencies from that arbitrary section in the current section's deps.

I would be surprised if that would work for any section with more than one entry in it (and even then the reference is an array that would be casted to string?). You should instead use https://tox.wiki/en/4.21.2/config.html#configuration-reference

@gaborbernat I did indeed read the docs both before, during, and after working through this problem and filing this issue, so I think I am left still confused unfortunately 😕 I don't think I am understanding the "you should instead use" and how it's different from the example. I want to understand and do the right thing, but having a hard time.

It looks like the of in your example also needed "deps" at the end of the list. I think it wasn't clear to me how the of worked, and it's possible the documentation's example is slightly buggy too?

I totally agree that the toml expansion is not well documented. I spend an unresonable amount of time to find the right syntax for lists

Hmm... i searched the docs yesterday and only seen the docs part argparse, missed this one. Now that you showed it to me I find it just fine. Maybe the problem is not the missing docs (or PEBKAC) but more of a combination of discoverability and the unexpected silent behavior?

I tried it wrongly in various ways but tox never warned me that something is fishy, instead it did run something. Maybe we can spot these bad usages (very common for anyone attempting to migrate from ini to toml) and warn or even error the user and hint them with a link to the documentation example?

Example of mistake:

commands_post = [{extend = true, replace = "{[tool.tox.testenv.lint]commands_post}"}]

• tox knows that commands_post is a list of lists
• in this case expansion should only allow replace = "ref" with of being a list, right?

I did not look at implementation for this, so I might make some wrong assumptions. I only describe it from the consumer point of view. "tox user trying to migrate config" (btw, using ChartGPT did a decent job, helped later by cursor to fix these many bugs).

Here is a practical example of tox silently doing something else:

In current form, tox -e pkg will not run any command and succeed! If you comment the second command from the list, it will start running the first command as expected.

I am not sure what is wrong with the second line but because it does fallback to something else silently, I find this not only a poor UX also dangerous as people might slip some mistakes and endup not running their tests locally on CI, until they discovered the problem. In fact this made me raised the draft #3578 for at least providing some info when toml file fails to load, one first step towards better behaviour.
