Linux mint 19 introduce automatic updates, Gnome Software 3.30 introduce automatic update too.
In the Linux Mint only fwupd is lacking.

Having Cinnamon support firmware updates - through the Update Manager - as I believe happens in Gnome, would indeed be good.

It's a good suggestion, but for lack of a Dell (or whichever other hardware also supports this) I wouldn't be able to test this myself and I'd rather not introduce a feature that messes with someone's firmware without being sure it does what it should. So it probably won't be coming from me. Maybe somebody else will add it.

Looking at the manual, you can just run fwupdmgr update in a terminal to apply all available updates.

It looks like that GNOME Firmware is in Ubuntu repositories since 20.04, so it will be available in Linux Mint 20. :-)

Could you not add the code as best you can and then get someone else to test it?

Still: at present the following tricky situation obtains. For at least some harware and some updates and some Linux distributions, fwup will not install updates, seemingly because of an Ubuntu bug. See here and here. Actually though the most relevant page is an Ubuntu one that, I am afraid, I have failed to rediscover.

Once that problem is fixed then it does seem needful that Mint add a GUI for fwupd.

Fwupd has a C/C++ interface, mintupdate was written in Python, we needed CPython to provide a package for mintupdate. It should probably be part of xapp
