The URL is a dead man's switch that turns a 'yes' into a 'no' in January 2026.

A lack of maintenance is rarely actively communicated #1649 so the badge helps.

Since this needs to be updated yearly it doesn't make sense to
include in the individual package READMEs that get included with
individual releases and become outdated.

I'm not a fan of having to update this maintenance year manually. Feels like a poor quality source of information. Last published date and activity in the repo are much more useful.
