[Feature Request] Support for changing model?

With the new premium pricing model, Coding Agent can get expensive very quickly. Can GitHub please add support for using 4o or 4.1, which are included for free?

@fishcharlie Coding agent does not currently support model picking or changing models. Instead, we abstract model choice to offer the model that performs best. However, given that some models perform better for certain tasks and are priced differently, we are discussing a path forward for a solution similar to this. I'll add your feedback to our current discussion.

@nhu-do Thank you so much for your reply. I understand GitHub needs to make money on this product, but the current pricing structure feels unsustainable to me as the consumer, and also doesn't seem to align well with the competition. I would personally pay more for this tool, but it just eats through premium requests so quickly. If GitHub introduced a plan for $200/mo that had 30k (or more) premium requests, that would be incredible. Maybe it could also include cheaper premium request costs over the limit as well?

Another idea beyond changing models or introducing a higher tier plan. It would be incredible for this tool if you could "delay" execution. Services like OpenAI API offer major discounts if you are ok with waiting up to 24 hours for the response. Offering major discounts in exchange for users being ok with delaying execution might be a great strategy for customers to control their costs.

So I just wanna be clear. It's not the performance of some models for certain tasks, it's really the pricing structure for me personally. I just figured to focus on the model aspect since GitHub allows unlimited use of 4o & 4.1 (I do question if 4o & 4.1 would perform well in this environment; I've been very impressed with the current performance of Claude here, but at least it'd be free). Fixing the pricing structure is very urgent IMO.

Guess that issue got resolved with coding agent now only consuming a single premium request

Yeah I'll let @nhu-do decide if we should close this issue. The only reason I originally created this issue was because I hit my premium request quota really fast. I'm pretty sure the fact the one premium request per session fixes that.
