ChatGPT Web Search tool in Codex

I think one feature which would really elevate Codex above the competition is the integration of the same web search tool which GPT 5 has in the ChatGPT app, where it does multiple sequential web searches.

From my experience this is the best web search AI implementation which exists, and I think it is a shame not to use it in Codex, (I find the competition here has really poor web search tools).

This, combined with a plan mode would make the quality of plans much higher, and would take advantage of OpenAI's already leading web search tool.

my biggest pain point

anything that requires research requires you to switch out of Codex

which is a shame bc GPT-5 Thinking is the #1 researcher when it has the tools (such as on ChatGPT)

Web search was added in Codex V0.24!

How does one invoke it? When I prompt Use the WebSearch tool, it either straight up responds "I don't have access" or tries to circumvent it by using other MCP tools like Playwright for web searching. Is there a config I'm missing?

Edit: I'm on CLI version 0.42
