How to create a Domain Resource

Can someone tell me how to add a domain resource? As a test I created a very simple web page on one of my servers on my LAN, just a standard html page. Running it locally, ie using the internal ip address in my browser it works fine. So in pangolin I created a domain resource with SSL disabled, authentication disabled and no rules. Result - using the domain resource link in my browser doesn't work. So I updated the resource to a subdomain instead, added a subdomain name and left the other settings the same - result it works.
What gives?_
Update: I think this is my mistake - as the domain name in my DNS provider points the domain at the VPS running Pangolin its just going round in circles!!
