Requesting OCA addon to be transferred to odoo community

After an addons is shown to work great for the current odoo version, what mechanism exists for us to request that addon (or a set of addons) to be formally transferred / included in the odoo community addon registry?

You should determine which repository the module fits best in and then submit a pull request. The community will review it; if the proposal is well received, a PSC member can merge it and the module will become part of the OCA repository.

This isn’t common. Odoo SA usually ignores the OCA’s existence. I also think keeping the module here makes it easier for the community to maintain. Another point is that Odoo SA might already have a similar feature, but it isn’t open source.

I mean for modules that are currently managed by OCA say OCA/knowledge is there are mechanism for them to become formally a part of odoo proper?

No. I mean, could you provide the url of the repo of the modules you want to share ?

Ahhh I see @antoniospneto Thank you very much for clarifying the relationship between OCA and Odoo SA.

Perhaps we can develop open source replacements for closed-source odoo features, though to be safe, it would be a good idea if we have some sort of clean room policy (if we don't have one already) to avoid accidental copyright breaches?

Actually I am a lawyer myself and I am keen to have a proper open-source legal app for odoo. I have looked at a couple of open source legal apps such as the one by cybrosys, but they are a bit primitive.

Once I have had a grasp of the usage and API of odoo, will make a call of whether forking one of the existing open source legal apps or starting one from scratch :)

starting from scratch with Odoo (especially community) is always possible, this will let you fully customize how things are defined inside. then later you can decide which license will apply to it, as you are the one who made it :D

Just a second thought - I am learning odoo 18 right now and will cover the project tutorial soon. Perhaps I will wait until odoo 19 has been released and see how the project, document and hr timesheet modules work together on odoo 19, and re-assess whether I still need to do a law firm app by subclassing the odoo 19 vanilla project app, and if so, what extra features should be included......
